In the late 1960’s, the NSW State Government announced plans to build a major hospital at Westmead on the site of the old Parramatta Showground. Sydney’s west had limited access to hospital care but was rapidly becoming an area of significant growth and expansion.
The property as we know it was purchased by the Uniting Church Parramatta Mission in 1977, to be used as a coffee shop serving morning teas and lunches, and as a centre for groups. It was bought with a view to building accommodation, and the first stage of the hotel was built in 1979. The original hotel of 28 rooms was opened in June 1979 and called Wesley Lodge.
Today, 175 Hotel Westmead offers 59 rooms with an additional six apartments located nearby servicing the medical precinct of Westmead and its visitors.
